Preparing to stop
Consider why you smoke
You have to smoke a lot before your brain becomes used to
high nicotine levels. When the levels fall you may experience that empty feeling
which makes you crave a cigarette. Satisfying the craving makes some cigarettes
seem pleasurable. If you focus on why and when you smoke cigarettes, you will notice
that you smoke mainly just out of habit. However, when you have given up for a few
months any craving will be more to do with memories of smoking than any physical
cause.
Consider NRT
Giving up smoking can be daunting, but now there is more support
available than ever to help you quit. Some people prefer to stop smoking just using
will power. Others find that nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is helpful. NRT
is available on prescription or from pharmacists.
Find support
Many GPs surgeries run local smoking cessation clinics. There are also helplines available 24 hours
a day for when you need support, advice and practical help (see Useful Links). With or without support, you will have to change the way you think
to be successful. Think of yourself as a non-smoker rather than an ex-smoker. Think
of the gains you are making rather than the habit you are giving up.
Buy a piggy bank for your savings
It will help you estimate how much you will save if you stop
smoking for a year.
