Are there any side effects?
The drugs used to reduce stomach acid seem to be very well tolerated by
the
majority of patients.
Nevertheless, some patients may get side effects, the most frequent being headache
and diarrhoea. Sucralfate and bismuth may cause constipation and stools often turn
black when taking bismuth. There seem to be no serious problems related to the long-term
use of acid-suppressing drugs. Some have been used continuously for several years
in many millions of patients with no major ill effects.
